Online Networking

Online Job Search Networking is a must!

One of my job search clients told me today that they hope that the COVID vaccine rollout speeds up because they want to get back to attending in person networking meetings (Woo is one of their top 5 strengths based on the Clifton StrengthFinders Assessment). I told them that it’s going to be a while before this happened, so they need to get extremely proficient at online video networking because it’s here to stay! This is the top way that my job search clients are finding positions that aren’t posted (the hidden job market)!

So here’s a RULE for you to think about . . .

Video Interviews are Here to Stay! Get Really Good at Them – Part 2

Video Interviewing

COVID-19 has changed the way companies interview and it may never go back to the way it used to be. Many companies are now hiring exclusively through remote means (phone and video conferencing). The jury is out if these hires will perform as well as someone who is at some point vetted in person, but as a betting man I am betting they will be.

In Part 1 (click here to read part 1)  I provided 3 success tips. I am going to add 7 more tips here, so you have my Top 10 tips for video interviewing.

In an Interview You Can Only Control What You Can Control!

You can only control what you can control and then you must let go of the rest.  You can’t make the hiring manager like you.  You can’t at the end of the interview talk back parts of what you said and ask for a “do over”.  You can’t jump in a time machine and turn back time if you were a few minutes late. You have a lot of control in your interview process and too often candidates give up that control long before they walk in through the front door for an on-site interview.

What you CAN do is . . .

Do You Really Exist as a Job Seeker if You Aren’t on LinkedIn?

Over 94% of internal and external recruiters use LinkedIn to source candidates.  If you’re a professional it is critical that you are on LinkedIn with a magnetic, complete profile to attract recruiters to you.  Start with these 3 tips:

  • Professional Looking Headshot: You can do this using your own camera/cell phone or have it done professionally, but if you do it yourself please no pics with the fish you caught or cut out of a crowd where we see someone else’s shoulder)
  • Engaging Headline: You have 120 characters, so use them all. Combine the job title you want, like Director Product Management, with job skills and key attributes. Separate each using the vertical line “|” typically found on your keyboard near the “Enter” button.
  • “About” Summary: You have 2,000 characters, so use them all. This section is written in first person (I am) that highlights your key skills and why they should be interested in talking you.

This is more important . . .
