Be Intentional as You Think About Your Daily Routine and How to Redesign it to Better Support Your Job Search Success!
We are all creatures of habit; we do the same things most days in about the same order. Our routines create order and when you lost your job (layoff, fired, quit) your whole routine changed immediately. Most people don’t settle into a healthy daily routine during their job searches, let alone think about the best way to design your day to create the greatest success in your job search and to shorten the length of your job search. I want to help you be different and successful!
So try this approach . . .
RETHINK YOUR DAILY ROUTINE TO DRIVE JOB SEARCH SUCCESS
Set aside one hour for this exercise (without distractions) and do the following:
- Write down your current daily routine, from the moment you get up to the moment you go to bed.
- Focus on your morning routine first. Evaluate each step you are taking and ask yourself “does doing this help or hurt me get to peak performance in my life and job search?”. Pick three daily habits/rituals that aren’t helpful and re-engineer or replace them with positive activities.
- Don’t change too much at once. After changing the first 3, use your new habits for a week to make sure that they stick before you change anything else.

I love the idea of small changes! A night owl by preference, I have found that forcing myself up “early” and getting that first giant cup of coffee in asap helps find find the elusive productive mindset I need to succeed in my search. Someday, my early might even approach everyone else’s…
Thank you for your comments. I used to be a night owl too but had to train myself to get up early and start the day. I use the same daily routine (almost) every day and it really helps start the day off right!
This is so true and definitely was a challenge for me. Having that Focus on Intentional Actions made a world of difference for me!
Tim so glad that my post resonated with you. Continue to be intentional with your time in your new position and you will be so much more successful!
Thanks @jumptheladder For this critical information. Process is so important to the job search! Focusing in on the tasks with the biggest ROI.
Appreciate your comment Henry. Many job seekers don’t have a process for their job search, let alone a process that they have confidence that it actually works and reduces the time and stress of their job search. This is the #1 thing to do to land the next position in your career.
