Five Weeks Left in 2021 – Do NOT Slow Down Your Job Search
This end of the year is quickly approaching, but the worst thing you can do in your job search is to slow down! Yes, there are three holidays coming up (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve) – OK – four if you count Black Friday for great shopping deals! Companies are still hiring – they are trying to fill positions before the end of the year. Also, people tend to be in a better mood around the holidays so also schedule networking meetings, you will have a higher percentage of people say yes and meet with you! Keep your pace up and you may be pleasantly surprised with your results!
Reach Out to Everyone in Your Connection Universe!
Contact everyone you know and let them know that you are looking for the right next step in your career and ask them for networking meetings. A recent successful job seeker did this and 20% of his total network responded with ideas and were open for networking calls/ in person meetings. He focused on the 20% who responded and didn’t worry about the 80% who didn’t (many worry about these – forget about them for now). Through networking he identified the right opportunity and knocked their socks off through his interviews. Networking works; so, get out and do the work!
When Applying On-Line Follow ALL the Instructions – 100% EVERYTIME!
Sometimes you just absolutely must apply for a job online, either through the dreaded Applicant Tracking System (ATS) or via email at smaller firms. Be sure to carefully read the directions and follow them 100%! Send everything that they ask for, in exactly the way they request it. If the ATS requires you to cut and paste parts of your resume into various sections and gives you the option to attach your resume as a PDF – – do both! Yes, every online application can be time consuming and tedious! Yes, some of the questions can seem trite or seem not to be related to the job you are applying for. It doesn’t matter! Follow all instructions carefully and do everything that is required. You can, and will, be rejected for an incomplete application
Are you Keeping in Touch with the People You Have Already Met?
A big job search mistake is to only focus on meeting new people and forgetting about the people you already know. It is extremely important to stay connected and nurture your current relationships. You need to consistently reengage with the most important people in your network. Nurturing these relationships in important. As you learn more in your job search, engaging with people you have already talked to may be helpful because your increased knowledge may allow you to circle back and ask additional and better questions. Rate your business connections and set up a reminder system so you can stay connected
