Define What You Want (and Don’t Want) in Your Next Position
It is critical that you define exactly what you want in your next role. At a minimum, this includes the following: Responsibilities, Compensation, Title, Industry, Culture, Work from Home / Commute, Work from Home / Commute. Take time to evaluate your skills, priorities and what is profoundly important to you. Whether you have been searching for a new role for a while, or if you are just starting, this is a crucial step in creating the right focus for you in your job search activities. Don’t cut corners; do the work!
Important Tip for All, but Especially Important for Those Trying to Pivot Their Career
According to Persuasion Scientists Tormala, Jia and Norton you should focus on your potential because – somewhat counterintuitively – the potential to be great at something will often seem more compelling to decision makers than actually being great at the same thing. If you are staying in your current field cover that you are great at your job (with examples) and that you will continue to be great at the hiring company. For those that are pivoting (new career different from their history), show your transferrable skills fit the role and that you will be great doing it! Give examples of success at your last/current role that required you to learn new skills as you bridge your experience to the new position.
Killer Interview Mistakes – Talking Down Your Accomplishments
As a hiring manager, I often interviewed candidates that wanted to appear humble, or a team player and they often talked down their own accomplishments making it seem like the really weren’t a major contributor to the success of the organizations they worked for. I had a job search coaching client tell me that in one interview he kept saying “we” accomplished this, or “we” did that and the hiring manager finally said, “I am not hiring “we” I am hiring a person that can get things done. What part of the “we” were you?” He didn’t get the job but learned a valuable lesson. Be proud of your accomplishments and talk about them factually, from the standpoint of what you did. The hiring manager is hiring a “you” not a “we”!
