Some Sobering Numbers From Recent Career Experts: 45 – 3 – 4 – 6 – 9

Some sobering numbers from recent career experts:  45 – 3 – 4 – 6 – 9.  What do these numbers mean?

The average person in the workforce today will work for 45 years, have 3 or more different and distinct careers, change jobs every 4 years or less and live through economic downturns and possibly recessions every 6 to 9 years.

On top of this I was at a business conference recently and the guest speaker asked us to look to the left and the right at our fellow attendees and then predicted 1 out of every 3 attendees wouldn’t be at the same company in the next 3 years!

Pretty sobering! So the question is, if these predictions are even close, what are you doing to plan and manage your career? Do you even have a plan, a WRITTEN plan for your career?

Whether you are unemployed, unhappy in your current job or underemployed, you should be planning the next step in your career.

  1. When I read this I realized I am not managing my career. I have suffered through 3 layoffs in the past 8 years and I need to be prepared for it to happen again. I need to learn to be ready, instead of reacting to management deciding it’s time to let a lot of people go! Thanks for sharing this – I finally get it, I am responsible for my career and need to take charge!

    1. Greg thanks for sharing that you had an aha moment. You are in charge of your career and need to keep networking and helping others even when you are employed. Keep your skills current, attend industry meetups and pay attention to what is going on at your company. If layoffs are rumored, be proactive and active your network to identify other opportunities. You are in charge!

  6. I’m a new reader and wonder what you think about how the coronvirus is affecting professionals finding their next position? I just lost my job and haven’t looked for a new job since 2009 when I lost my job in the recessions. Any thoughts/advice?

    1. I apologize for not replying sooner. I didn’t see your comment in my blog console. Coronavirus is having a big impact on certain sectors of the economy (i.e., tourism, hospitality, travel, hotels, etc.), but many companies are still hiring at a brisk pace. Find a job search group so you can learn more about how to job search in today’s market reality. I have been co-leading one and we are now meeting virtually Tuesday’s from 9 to 11 am. We average 30 to 50 attendees weekly. Here is the link to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYvcuCgrzMv-yc46ogv2YCRfMjvsxF0AA
