As a job search architect it is frustrating that these three job search myths are still around and readily believed in today’s job market. Here are 3 of the top job search myths that will kill your job search if you believe them:
Myth #1 – Only Apply Online for Jobs: Yes it is very easy to find a job opening online using a plethora of available resources:
- Search Engines: Google, Bing, etc.
- Job Posting websites: Indeed, Simply Hired, LinkedIn Jobs, etc.
- Company’s website: Many companies have a career page and post their job openings there.
When you apply for a job on-line you feel a sense of satisfaction when you finish the application and hit “send”. Unfortunately, hundreds or thousands of people could also apply on-line and then it is a “numbers” game if your resume will ever be read and passed on to the hiring manager. Apply on-line and ALSO find someone in the company to advocate for you and take your resume to HR and the hiring manager directly.
Myth #2 – You Don’t Need a Written Plan: There is a belief that you can just “wing” your job search and don’t need to write down your goals and a detailed plan to get there. Statistics show that you will shorten your job search by 40 to 50% by having a written job search plan but it is my experience that MOST people DON’T have any semblance of a written plan. I have asked 933 job seekers if they have a written plan and only 8 did; that’s less than 1%! Create a rough plan and revise weekly and you will become more confident in your job search and succeed much QUICKER!
Myth #3 – You Can Easily Find a Job on Your Own: A couple of years ago that job search landscape totally changed. It is now your responsibility to make it “Stupid Simple” for a company to hire you! This means self-marketing! Whether you are an Engineer, Finance Manager, Technician, or other career choice, it is your responsibility to market yourself and be relevant for the jobs you are applying for. Not sure how to do this? Hire a Job Search Architect to help you navigate this often confusing process! Someone who works with Job Search candidates with over 80% of their time, and leads them to secure the right next step in their career!
